The European Union’s Medical Commission, meeting yesterday in Warsaw, has issued recommendations that persons with health risks should avoid using cyberhotels. A total of 52 people have died of heart attacks this year in cyberhotels in the EU area alone.

It is not often that this columnist is lost for words, but the concert arranged by Passport PLC in a disused downtown industrial lot in Dallas yesterday came very close. For a start, the choice of venue was masterly: the city’s old Elm St. Industry Park, which has been allowed to return in the wake of the post-industrial revolution to a series of picturesque ruins set amidst grassy knolls and young trees. Interestingly enough, the concert was non-virtual, in that it was not distributed simultaneously through the datanets. The reason was that Passport have had one or two system teething troubles, and have not yet been able to produce hologram facsimiles for some of the concert elements.

Investigations by Athens City Council into the recent flooding that caused chaos in the metro tunnels under the Greek capital have revealed a surprising culprit. The holes found in tunnel walls were caused by cybermoles. A preliminary report on the incident was handed in today by Chief Engineer Paulos Kristianos.

Cybermoles have been used with great success in cases of tunnel collapse, and in the wake of mining accidents. On this occasion, however, it seems as though some escaped cybermoles used during the renovation of the metro system had unexpectedly survived and gone feral, boring several shafts between the metro tunnels and the capital’s principal water mains. At last! Holograms go to the movies!

In response to huge public demand, the world’s first moving holograms will be on show for an extra week, until next Friday, at the Blair Science Centre in the Millennium Dome.

The animated hologram has been described as one of the greatest scientific puzzles of recent decades, and its invention has been hailed as an advance to match that of the videophone. For years, scientists have tried in vain to producing moving holographic images. At one point the task was widely held to be quite impossible. Finally the Chinese-born Prof. Lee Cheng came up with an idea for getting holograms moving after he delved back into the folk beliefs of his native land - according to which different colours stand for different properties, and their variations have an impact on the destiny of China.

The rogue anti-mildew bacteria developed by World Biochemicals is spreading like wildfire across Central Europe. It is currently threatening vineyards in the Alsace, Mosel, Rheingau and Rheinhessen regions, but EU oenology experts fear this is only the overture to destruction on a far greater scale.

The bacteria was developed initially by the huge Swiss-based consortium to remove the problem of damp-related mildew in old buildings. The GE programming limited the bacteria’s focus to two strains of mildew. In laboratory trials and during the first phase of in situ applications last winter the bacteria behaved as expected and results in Switzerland were impressive, pushing WB’s shares to new highs in London and Frankfurt. However, this summer, perhaps as a result of record temperatures in Central Europe, the bacteria began to develop an appetite for other forms of fungus. It is currently spreading northward into French and German vineyards and eating the yeast genus known as Saccharomyces ellipsoideus which lives on the skin of the grape and is essential to the conversion of sugar to ethyl alcohol in the winemaking process. The first indications of similar destruction among indigenous grape varieties - Mavrud and Gamza - in the wine-growing regions of Bulgaria have also been reported.

The Namibian manufacturer NamibPow reports it is unable to keep up with demand for its wind-up computers.

NamibPow has already sold and received advance orders for upwards of 80 million units, even though the first machines designed for the consumer market only left the company’s Windhoek factories six months ago. At present the assembly lines are capable of turning out approximately 12 million machines a year. The great majority of orders for the new computer have come from Third World countries.

However, weakening of the bones through calcium loss, known as osteoporosis, has become a major health issue, particularly among older women.
