They should also avoid absolutely all exciting or potentially oppressive cyberenvironments. A particularly dangerous new trend has emerged in the so-called “cybersuits”, as these are known to elevate emotional states to extremes, often beyond normal human tolerance levels.

Forests set to become world's gene bank as genic pine proves capable of storing and reproducing plant and animal hereditary factors

Original story

The hit-team had posed as tourists on a day visit to the BioMechanics complex, and had managed to smuggle into the datacentre of the company’s age prevention laboratory a group of nanobugs that were pre-programmed to infiltrate the centre’s hologram units, search out any aluminium oxides they could find, and eat them. For a start, the choice of venue was masterly: the city’s old Elm St. Industry Park, which has been allowed to return in the wake of the post-industrial revolution to a series of picturesque ruins set amidst grassy knolls and young trees. Interestingly enough, the concert was non-virtual, in that it was not distributed simultaneously through the datanets. The reason was that Passport have had one or two system teething troubles, and have not yet been able to produce hologram facsimiles for some of the concert elements.

**40 stolen birch-laminate gene chairs found in Glasgow market - thousands of patented Pentik chairs still unaccounted for

Original story

Mankind’s first real step into a new element is now two years of age. Two years ago, the world witnessed the birth of the first human children designed to live and breathe in water. Now there are some forty such aquanaut babies still alive, despite early problems with feeding and communication.

Since these babies are incapable of surviving outside of their aquatic environment, considerable difficulties emerged in the early stages over feeding and communication. These have, however, been overcome with a mixture of old-fashioned ingenuity and the latest technological advances. Feeding has been possible by the manufacture of a kind of artificial nipple, which gives the infant a solution corresponding to mother’s milk as necessary, and by energy packs containing the required proteins and antibodies. Communication, on the other hand, has been achieved using divers equipped with ultrasound speech synthesisers, altered to take account of the children’s nervous system and larynx muscles.

*Landfill biorobots go on rampage and eat São Paolo slum area - Brazilian army halts advance

Original story

The damage was caused by biorobots from a nearby landfill site, which have reproduced in uncontrolled fashion, apparently owing to high lead and artificial preservatives content in the waste they were designed to consume. They broke out of the huge fenced landfill compound in vast numbers, spreading to the makeshift shelters and lean-tos of the shanty town of Patriarca, and cut a broad swathe through several blocks, devouring the buildings just as if they were their regular diet of garbage.

Death of all aquanaut children reported - UN calls for global minute's silence tomorrow

Original story

News agencies were stunned by reports today of the tragic death of all forty aquanaut children at their Nursery Centre. The children were found dead early in the morning outside of their kindergarten tank.

First reports indicate that the children, all aged 2 years and seven months, had shown curiosity in their surroundings and had crawled up the shallow incline of the walls of the tank, and had then slid down the other side, from where they were unable to get back into the water.

Energypower Ltd Annual Report: R&D Dept.
R&D Dept. Electric Plant & Forestry Project

The Research and Development Department has been led during the period under review by Prof. Akorn Suphorn. The Department employed 192 persons at the end of the year. Operational and database processing capacity averaged 900,000 Gb/min. These figures also include computer-driven artificial organisms.

In the course of the year the R& D Department has been engaged on a number of projects geared to new sources of energy. The most successful venture has been the energy forest, which is already into the pilot phase. In contrast, investigations into the extraction of heat from the earth’s crust, slow-filtering of solar radiation, and marine current generators have shown that at this point the technology is not economically viable. They will be re-examined in a year or two, by which time energy transfer technology may have developed in such a way to render them financially attractive methods of energy generation.

Feral cybermoles cause of flooding in Athens metro tunnels

Original story

Feral cybermoles cause of flooding in Athens metro tunnels

Investigations by Athens City Council into the recent flooding that caused chaos in the metro tunnels under the Greek capital have revealed a surprising culprit. The holes found in tunnel walls were caused by cybermoles. A preliminary report on the incident was handed in today by Chief Engineer Paulos Kristianos.

Cybermoles have been used with great success in cases of tunnel collapse, and in the wake of mining accidents. On this occasion, however, it seems as though some escaped cybermoles used during the renovation of the metro system had unexpectedly survived and gone feral, boring several shafts between the metro tunnels and the capital’s principal water mains. Metro traffic in Athens was at a standstill for several hours, as the damaged trains had to be individually towed to the depot before the lines could be pumped out and re-opened for passenger traffic.

PRIVAMED personal home doctor services

Original story

I must admit I had not grasped the full import and danger of this question until last weekend, when I visited my constituency and spent Saturday evening at home. If you will permit me, I shall offer you a brief fragment from my family life that may open your eyes as much as it did mine. Naturally it would be ideal if all of us had the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the toys under discussion, but regrettably time does not allow. The manufacturing plants are turning these advertising devices out as fast as they can make them, and soon voters across the continent will be well and truly brainwashed. How will we then be able to reach a sensible decision?

Hologram newspapers drive paper manufacturers to the brink - UPM and Canadian Paper close newsprint mills

Original story

Watersaver suits are becoming an increasingly common sight in Southern Europe and the Middle East, and they are by no means just a tool for adventurers who like to get off the beaten track. Initially the Watersaver was an extremely expensive item, and the market was limited to a handful of extreme trekkers and adventurers - of the increasingly rare “non-virtual” variety. Since then, we have seen the introduction of a new version that also offers the properties of a sophisticated heat exchange and control suit - the Enbody 6. At the same time the cost of the Watersaver outfit has fallen to about one-tenth of 2010 prices. Use of the suits is steadily increasing, especially in sub-tropical and tropical areas. Many of these regions suffer from acute shortages of water, and water is expensive. The heat extraction component of the suit keeps the wearer feeling comfortable, and also provides a useful source of onboard energy.

At last!
The animated hologram has been described as one of the greatest scientific puzzles of recent decades, and its invention has been hailed as an advance to match that of the videophone. For years, scientists have tried in vain to producing moving holographic images. At one point the task was widely held to be quite impossible. Finally the Chinese-born Prof. Lee Cheng came up with an idea for getting holograms moving after he delved back into the folk beliefs of his native land - according to which different colours stand for different properties, and their variations have an impact on the destiny of China.

Daytime soap classic** *The Bold and the Beautiful* **recorded on hologram cubes

Original story

The bacteria was developed initially by the huge Swiss-based consortium to remove the problem of damp-related mildew in old buildings. The GE programming limited the bacteria’s focus to two strains of mildew. In laboratory trials and during the first phase of in situ applications last winter the bacteria behaved as expected and results in Switzerland were impressive, pushing WB’s shares to new highs in London and Frankfurt. However, this summer, perhaps as a result of record temperatures in Central Europe, the bacteria began to develop an appetite for other forms of fungus. It is currently spreading northward into French and German vineyards and eating the yeast genus known as Saccharomyces ellipsoideus which lives on the skin of the grape and is essential to the conversion of sugar to ethyl alcohol in the winemaking process. The first indications of similar destruction among indigenous grape varieties - Mavrud and Gamza - in the wine-growing regions of Bulgaria have also been reported.

Super artificial skin senses weak electrical fields - new breakthrough in gene manipulation

Original story

new breakthrough in gene manipulation

The arrival on the market of super artificial skin has generated a host of new professions.

The most significant of the new professions is that of the electronics and electrical detector. The electrodermis organogenetic skin developed for this purpose can sense even weak electrical currents, resistances, or charges. An experienced electrodetector can match the performance of a conventional universal test meter, with the only condition being that the maximum voltage cannot exceed 32V. Skilled detectors are capable of sensing down to 100mV.

Beyond Passion* **experience-expanding hypnostimuli trigger epileptic seizures

Original story

More than 900 people have been taken to hospital in Acapulco, Mexico after mysterious epileptic attacks. According to police reports, all the sufferers were users of Virtual Playmate’s latest hyperexperience, the “Beyond Passion” sexual alterworld.

Acapulco is one of the world’s 41 designated amusement free-zones. Practically no national or international limits are placed in these locales on virtual arcades, chemical stimulants, or other forms of entertainment and amusement. Residents and visitors alike in free-zone cities are able to undergo any and all experiences they wish to try, by any means at their disposal. And there is usually no lack of means. The only restrictions in force concern the inviolability of real persons and real property. Acapulco attracts upwards of 140 million visitors each year, and the pursuit of entertainment at all costs is not always without its dangers. For example the death toll last year in the bordellos of the city’s famed Virtual Erotic Center was 76, as people “pushed the silken virtual envelope” beyond their natural physical limits.

Cultivation and care of Wrapit packaging plants (Brassica oleracea canadiensis)

Original story

In the last two or three years the use of artificial personalities has spread into several fields. In videophone service functions they have only been in operation for a couple of months, but already the harsh critical reaction has surprised many analysts.

The artificial personalities used to man videophone service switchboards are autodidactic programmes designed specifically for this task. The basic configuration is carried out in the manufacturing plant prior to delivery. The programme learns in the workplace, by listening to calls arriving at the service desks, since in the majority of services almost all questions are standard enquiries. After a fairly lengthy acclimatisation period the artificial personality learns to recognize stock questions, however they may be phrased. It also learns how to respond with follow-up questions to determine details that may be necessary, and sets its onscreen expression to match the individual situation - showing compassion, worry, determination, etc. as required. Artificial personalities have been taken up by vidiphone service providers primarily on cost grounds, as they are cheap to buy and run. Equally, it has now become difficult to find sufficiently service-minded staff to fill the vacancies.

Don't waste your energy - Enbody heat exchange and storage outfits

Original story

According to early reports from Swiss police, the apparent cause of the accident was a programming fault in the suit.
Anti-doping medicine in crisis - nanomolecules improve performance and oxygen intake

One of the biggest headaches facing researchers and physicians attending the XXVIIth FINA World Sports Medicine Congress in Ottawa this week was the issue of nanomolecules, or programmed nanorobots introduced into the athlete’s bloodstream.
*

The use of nanomolecules has increased rapidly, particularly in applications where oxygen intake is decisive. The quantity of oxygen molecules they carry with them is greater than that contained in red blood-cells (erythrocytes), and the nanomolecule level in the bloodstream can be substantial with no adverse reactions. The vital electrolytic reaction of the oxygen molecules carried by the nanorobots, in which oxygen and hydrogen combine to form water, is also clearly faster than that achieved by oxygen molecules carried in blood-cells.

CDCuisinette - bringing the computer to the kitchen: the recipe for automated gourmet cooking!

Original story

Nokia’s memoryphone is finally available in the stores. The long lines outside telecoms retailers lifted the Finnish company’s shares, which have been in the doldrums lately, and trading was brisk in New York.
*

The special feature of the 7220 Memoryphone - dubbed in the media as “Talking Kong”, “The Elephone”, and even “The Monsterphone” - is that it hears and records everything that is spoken in the immediate vicinity. Earlier, industry confidence in the memoryphone had already begun to fade as the prototypes repeatedly failed to meet the requirements of the EU and USA Data Security Commission. According to DSC regulations, all devices linked to the UN-administered Internet must be subject to control by the authorities. Nokia has lobbied desperately for months to get exemption, claiming it was acting on behalf of the privacy of its customers, but the company has been obliged to surrender and install a port to allow surveillance by DSC agencies.

Singapore orders compulsory emotional rehabilitation for long-term prisoners

Original story

for long-term prisoners

Singapore has introduced emotional conditioning simulators as a feature of all prison sentences over six months. The aim of the conditioning is to improve prisoners’ behaviour while they serve out their time, and also to facilitate speedy rehabilitation on their release into society.
*

In the simulations the user is fitted with a virtual reality helmet, through which he encounters a variety of real-life situations. The programme contains built-in acceptance and rejection responses to the behavioural models offered by the prisoner to each situation, and either rewards or punishes answers with audio or visual stimuli. In addition the simulation contains subliminal signals designed to prompt subconscious associations and reinforce the expected behavioural responses. Prison authorities are enthusiastic about early results of the scheme, and believe that simulator training will cut down on unwanted behavioural models.

Test Drive: On-line Volvo 2010 is a ***** winner!

Original story

**

Sources in Delhi have revealed that for some 36 hours last week India and China were on the verge of all-out war. The reason for the flare-up was a bogus report screened on Indian TV channels. Members of the outlawed SAIT Freedom Front broke through media security walls and fed stations with a recording of what purported to be “a high-level meeting of the Chinese leadership”, which had actually been fabricated using virtual reality technology. Before the hoax was discovered both sides went to full alert, with thousands of troops mobilized in the remote border regions of Jammu and Ladakh.

EU Consumer Council recommends ultrasound washing instructions

Original story

*

Tattoo parlours can hardly have been more fashionable than they are today. Since the launching on the market in 2004 of tattooing materials as a spin-off from new developments in nanotechnology, the popularity of video tattoos has spread to all sections of society. *

The DSC has persuaded the great majority of the world’s nations to sign the Global Data Security Treaty worked out last year at the ground-breaking Montreal Conference. The states that have not as yet ratified the agreement account for only around 10% of the world’s Internet connections. The GDS Treaty requires operators in all originating countries to maintain a temporary database of details of the senders of all Internet messages for a two-month period from the dispatch of the message. The pact opens the way to systematic cross-border control of computer crime. One condition for the success of the venture, however, is that messages are not routed via third-party countries that have not ratified the agreement.

Aids vaccine wins WHO approval - Ethics Committee fears precedent

Original story

The LT-vaccine is a compound of numerous ingredients, all of which resemble vaccines in their own right. A part of the ingredients are gene-manipulated viroids, with the task of penetrating the HIV-virus and preventing its operation in the body. Viroids are microbes, smaller and simpler in structure than viruses, but larger than prions. First discovered in the 1970s, they consist of a single strand of nucelic acid without a protein coating. In the natural world, they can cause stunting and certain common diseases in plants. The remainder of the vaccine is a compound of varied items - vaccines and antibiotics - designed to promote the patient’s general condition and immune responses.

Customs seize more illegal personal identifiers in Heathrow swoop

Original story

The drone-kites differ from conventional remote-controlled aircraft in that they take their energy from the ground and can be airborne for a practically unlimited period. In actual fact, the most developed examples are flying robots. In certain areas they are so prevalent that they have caused disturbances to nesting birds. In Sri Lanka, for instance, where the craze has spread to all sections of society, many species of birds have not nested at all this year, since they have been surrounded on all sides by dozens of drone-kites. The kites have also interfered with commercial air traffic in numerous cases, despite strict exclusion zones in force around air corridors.

Finnish Labour Unions, IRS worried over growth in cash payments to smart cards

Original story

Some twenty-five years ago, the world was amazed by the introduction of self-winding wristwatches, which operated on more or less the same principle. Movenergy is a great deal more efficient and stores energy from not only the movements of the wrists or arms, but also from other parts of the body. In this way it is possible to recover the energy of the legs and back.

Nanorobots perfect surround & destroy technique on cancer cells - Medical Review hails new breakthrough

Original story

An important new step in the fight against of cancer was announced yesterday. Doctors in the Cancer Department of the Helsinki University General Hospital report that they have succeeded for the first time in destroying a cancer cell by the use of mechanical microrobots.

The robots, known as nanosomes, are smaller than 0.01mm. In essence, they are smart mechanical cells, and the treatment used in Helsinki involves implanting the nanosomes into the circulatory system of the cancer patient. The nanosomes can recognize cancer cells from among normal human cells, after which they attach themselves to the cell surface of the carcinoma. Then, having surrounded the tumour in this way, they feed cytotoxins to the cancer cell, arresting and ultimately killing it.

Finnish Net shoppers dissatisfied with current consumer goods distribution

Original story

Computer viruses and hackers breaking through datanet security firewalls have tested the patience of residents in several of the new suburbs featuring fully automated ambient control. The city worst affected has been the industrial new town of Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, originally developed in the late 1960s, and the home of the Open University. Milton Keynes was among the first locations to introduce such “smart housing” in suburbs such as Stonyfield, Llewelyn, and Uffington, added during the late 1990s. The property control networks were at the time hooked up - at the demand of the residents - to the public nets. Consequently, the people living in these areas have been able to monitor and direct their properties from their workplace or while travelling. In the light of the obvious breaches of security that have occurred in recent weeks, the decision is about to be reversed.

White House and Pentagon to get protective infrasound "overcoat"

Original story

A speciality developed originally by amateur inventors has provided a real sales boost for refrigerator maker Siemens. The company has fitted all the models in its top-of-the-line Luxus range with miniature cameras and a GSM connection.

It’s a familiar complaint - many people have to call home on their way back from work and ask what there is in the refrigerator, and what has to be bought from the shop on the corner. That’s all very well, if there is someone at home to answer the phone. In families with children in particular, the problem is often one of disappearing stocks of fridge staples like milk, eggs, tomatoes and the like. Or then again, people buy too much just to be on the safe side, and find themselves throwing away rotting vegetables and cartons of milk. In order to avoid this headache, several years ago a number of technology enthusiasts came up with a solution - to install simple closed-circuit cameras inside their refrigerator. Everybody remembers the early days of the Internet, when cameras were installed beside Coca-Cola machines on university campuses, so students could check from the Web if their local machine was full or empty, thus saving their tired young legs. This is simply taking things one step further.

Desalination plants bring life to Northern Sahara

Original story

*A solution to the problems of the overweight may be on the horizon. Last year, in the course of the ongoing project to map the human genome, researcher discovered the genetic sequences that influence systemic obesity and the hereditary tendency towards overweightedness. *

Systemic obesity is connected with numerous detailed factors in the structure of the human body. It is possible over time to influence this by means of gene manipulation, but the specific effects of different genetic sequences must first be examined in some detail. On the other hand, a tendency towards putting on excess weight (obesity is generally determined as being 20% or more above the desirable weight for one’s height, build, and sex) is more open to treatment. In this instance a mutation within one section of the genome brings about a disturbance that results in the individual not experiencing a sense of having eaten sufficiently, even after a healthy meal.

Eurovision winner trusts in satellite shepherd to locate children in virtual city

Original story

Hans Brick presented to a largely enthusiastic audience of industry experts a completely new type of paint, developed by Swedish Chemicals AB of Gothenburg. The most significant property of the new paint is that it reacts chemically with the surface it is designed to protect. The reaction in effect makes paint and surface into the same material. The paint is therefore no longer merely a protective layer, for example on concrete, but actually an integral part of the surface itself.

SatWeb to relay Net-TV channels

Original story

A research team at the Swedish Karolina Institute has made a breakthrough in the treatment of osteoporosis, one of the most common ailments facing the elderly, particularly women. The group have succeeded in increasing human bone formation to such an extent that it will mark a decisive improvement in the quality of life for most osteoporosis sufferers.

Human bone tissue dies and is recreated constantly. Roughly one-tenth of our bone substance is in a continuous state of flux, in which osteoclasts or “bone-destroying cells” wage a battle with osteoblasts that form new bone using calcium. Generally this process is in balance, such that the amount of bone remains constant. However, weakening of the bones through calcium loss, known as osteoporosis, has become a major health issue, particularly among older women. The onset of the disease stems from the continued activity of osteoclasts while their counterparts the osteoblasts no longer function as efficiently as before.

Hackers find backdoor to InterDict encryption codes

Original story

We live in an era of rapid change. The beginning of the new millennium proved in a shocking and appalling manner just how vulnerable our increasingly technical society has become. But there are many sides to the question. If we go back fifty years, only 1% of households had a refrigerator. In the virtual bank branch, the customer carries out the normal over-the-counter dealings via a multimedia network, talking to the familiar bank teller.

When the customer steps up to the counter, the curtain opens and the customer sees a view of the manned service desk at the nearest conventional main street branch of the bank, complete with clerk. The virtual counter contains an image scanner and a printer, by means of which the necessary documents are passed both ways between the bank and the customer. The most significant transactions are confirmed by placing a hand on the scanner, while less formal matters can be handled with a signature, a bank card containing an ID. photo, and verbal confirmation. The State-issued digital identity card can also be used to confirm that the customer is who he or she claims to be.

Afterword

[Home]

A few words about predicting the future

In the strict sense of the word, investigating the future is not possible. It is said that you can never tell what the future is going to bring. And those who say it are right, of course. But it is perhaps worth remembering that the study of the past is by no means without its problems, either. We cannot go back into the past to see for ourselves, and much of the material we get from the past is only indirect proof of what has happened. Furthermore, the greater the distance we try to go back, the more likely it is that the data we can gather will be so scanty that history often becomes more a matter of educated guesstimates than watertight facts.

Foreword

[Home]

This book has been a giant adventure for us. We have gazed in wonder at the marvels of what the future may bring, and recoiled in horror at the threatening visions that have revealed themselves, often from harmless beginnings. We have laughed as we pondered what politicians, salesmen, terrorists, and purveyors of pleasure might dream up for us in years to come, but it has often been a very nervous laughter. Human life is full of feelings - and it will be so into the next millennium.

Introduction

[Home]
